City Designates Delton Apartment
April 19, 2017

Yesterday, City Council designated the Delton Apartment located on 118 Ave as a Municipal Heritage Resource. Located in the Eastwood community, the building represents two distinct periods in Edmonton’s development.

When the Delton was built in 1915, 118 Avenue was located at the edge of the City and was relatively undeveloped. The Delton Apartment was originally a strictly residential, Edwardian influenced building. Features from this era include the brick cladding, decorative cornices and overall symmetry of the building.

Following WW2, the areas surrounding 118 Avenue grew rapidly. To serve this growing population, many new businesses opened and 118 Avenue became a thriving commercial corridor. Accordingly, the Delton Apartment underwent a major renovation to convert the main floor to commercial units in 1957. These alterations incorporated a number of mid-century design influences such as the large display windows with raw aluminum frames and mullions; the corrugated skirting and glass blocks below the display windows and the stucco sign band, which is tooled to resemble brick.

The City's Historic Resource Management Plan outlines the City's mission to identify, protect and promote the preservation and use of historic resources. The Plan contains 24 policies and 88 action items that direct how Edmonton's heritage should be preserved and celebrated.
