Edmonton could renew its bid for 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban drops out
Hope is alive again that Edmonton may host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after the city dropped its bid in February 2015 because it didn't have the financial support from provincial and federal governments.

On Monday, it was announced that the city slated to host the games — Durban, South Africa — withdrew from its commitment, citing similar financial restrictions.

Mayor Don Iveson called the news 'unfortunate' — Durban would have been the first African city to host the Commonwealth Games.

But it leaves the door open for Edmonton to make a last-ditch re-bid.

Edmonton mulls last-minute bid for Commonwealth Games
Edmonton could launch a last-minute bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after plans in Durban, South Africa, fell through Monday.

The news came as a surprise, but had local officials musing about the possibility.

“This raises some interesting possibilities … but the city could not undertake this alone,” said Mayor Don Iveson.

Edmonton was the second-to-last city in the 2022 race before it pulled out in February 2015.

The games could see the indoor velodrome built more quickly and get upgrades for the Kinsman Sports Centre, an athletes’ village at Blatchford and perhaps even the LRT extension. But with no money committed from Ottawa, the province asked the city to withdraw.
