    General Infill Discussion

Interesting discussion on Indigenous place names. I was slightly amused when I heard a British person try to pronounce Kananaskis, which they found very difficult. It reminded me of when I was in New Zealand and found the Maori place names unusual and difficult to pronounce. Locals, however...

    Downtown Real Estate

:rolleyes:I certainly don't take pleasure, but I also don't hand-wring about being left behind. Edmonton should be Edmonton and worry less about being compared to Calgary.

    Edmonton Real Estate Market

A sign that the market in some cities is truly messed up. Not healthy at all.

    Prairie Sky Gondola | 76.2m | ?s | Prairie Sky | DIALOG

Instead of going flashy or artificial, why not make the gondola reflect the river valley. Make each car feel like you are stepping into the woods as you float among the trees. Have massive windows, use local wood, make it feel Scandinavian chic instead of tacky Las Vegas knock off. I bet you...

    Tower 101 | 175m | 50s | Regency Developments | DER + Associates

On an unrelated noted, those Christmas decorations suspended on wires over the street looked amazing.

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

All I can think about when I see photos like this are the people recently who claimed the City couldn't finish projects and that we shouldn't be building so much...

Universiade-pavilion aka 'The Butterdome' - envelope renewal

I love European architecture, but it doesn't have to look European to be good architecture.

    Municipal Politics

Is it legal to consider cumulative effects? Wouldn't that mean that the use of a property would depend largely on when it was bought or developed relative to the whole neighbourhood? Doesn't that essentially mean that despite the same zoning, you can probably redevelop in a new neighbourhood...

Coronation Community Recreation Centre | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton | Dub Architects

My understanding is that the pool was built to be exactly 50m, which became a problem with computerized timing systems for competition that require room for the touch pad. It probably was prohibitively expensive to add a very small amount of room just for competitions, so it was left. I suspect...

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

I really hope we can come up with a catchy name for the "apparatus". The circlet? Borealis beacon? Lueur?

Jasper Avenue New Vision / Imagine Jasper Avenue

Based on some comments, it seems like the two biggest things holding Edmonton back from true greatness are the dip in Jasper and the hairpin turn on Gateway. Who knew 😵‍💫

    Stadium LRT Station Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton | GEC

If the issue is crime and disorder around transit, I think the real question here is whether installing entrance barriers is the best use of money. It will likely cost millions to purchase, install and maintain the equipment, so some thought should be given to other solutions, which may be more...

    Blatchford

I get the concern, but it also seems reasonable to require homes in Blatchford to use the utility that was purpose-built for heating/cooling. If you could use any system at any time, you wouldn't be able to amortize the cost of the district geothermal utility over time. The only difference I...

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

Not really interested in mercury jockeying with you about winter weather. You are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are wrong. Concrete is very expensive, it is susceptible to the freeze thaw cycle in Edmonton and, most importantly, I don't think the amount being used in the Warehouse...

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

Pave the whole park then. But this seems like the classic Edmonton approach that we can't learn anything from anywhere else "because its different here".

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

Yes, definitely can't do gravel in a northern climate.

    Blatchford

I suppose a lot will depend on the details, but I am not sure how you are arriving at the conclusion that people will be segregated. How is this different that the ownership of any property? Cultural or ethnic groups purchase property all the time and it isn't the end of the world. Also, you do...

    O-day’min Park (formerly Warehouse Park)

I think it would have been better to replace the concrete with something more natural (and likely cheaper). Lots of very nice parks in Europe and New York have gravel pathways that are far more natural, easier to maintain and improve drainage.

    Stationlands Residential Towers | 90m | 25s | Qualico | DIALOG

I think you are confusing concepts. Properties that are zoned for a certain type of development must be treated equally, regardless of whether a parcel in a new or older area. I don't believe most developers in new communities sell raw land, which is why most houses look similar and appear to be...
