I happened to stumble upon this random video by a French Youtube channel that criticizes (along predictable lines) the design of Canadian cities. I was gloating over the narrator's long rant about how downtown Calgary's high vacancy is putting it in danger of becoming useless (and talking about...
I don't think we have a general thread for discussing heritage places (i.e. beyond just homes), so I'm starting one.
To start off, the CoE is soliciting feedback on their guiding principles of their in-progress Heritage Places Strategy here. The poll is pretty slight, but at the end you can...
Even though they're non-descript glass boxes, I really quite like Stantec Tower and the JW Marriott—or specifically, I love the way they reflect sunrises and sunsets.
I'm thinking of things like this that looks quite straightforwardly like mistakes.
And on the first and second floors, there's the alternation of brick and stucco-ish material that are the same dark color and look meant to blend together, but they don't. I don't like the patchwork of colors...
If the post-secondary population of Downtown is growing, it would be great to see a couple vintage/consignment stores open up, perhaps up near MacEwan and Norquest. Right now, they seem to be concentrated in Strathcona and along 124 St.
Not a big fan of this weird stone-like cladding that's used here and on Grandin 4. It looks strictly worse than traditional brick and also just doesn't feel very authentic to Edmonton.
If you want to bring activity to an area that isn't seeing much, making it attractive for artists is not a bad idea, since they tend to have little money and a high tolerance for disorder. (Think downtown Manhattan in the 70s/80s, for example.) The problem is that that requires a large stock of...
If we want to recreate Montreal park hang culture, we should import their "you can drink in parks as long as you have a meal" rule. (But not for like, remote river valley parks.)
Alright, so somewhere in between "cool and new" and "died years ago." But given how slowly Metro 78 is going, we might not see much movement here for a while?
I had no idea these signs were that durable! Looking a bit more into it, the site is currently listed and is zoned at MU h16 f3.5 cf - Mixed Use. So we're probably not getting that tower unless the buyer is feeling ambitious enough to make the push for rezoning.
Someone (not me) made a Wikipedia article for O-day'min Park here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-day%27min_Park
As you can see, it needs a lot of work. One thing it could use is some high quality photos. If any of you are willing to contribute some of your own photos, would you mind uploading...
It seems like WP was complying with the letter but not the spirit of the law. I've written my councillor to say that I think this sort of thing needs to be expressly banned.
New mixed-use planned in Little Italy.
Current state of the Italian Centre warehouse:
Also, less importantly, this random Baptist church might be getting a makeover.
