Question to those in the know. How long can the excavated pit sit empty before it had to be built on or filled in?
And if the developer cannot build it fill in, could the city take it over?

Part of the reason things get so messed up is the chaotic, muddled approach to budgeting that the public does not understand or appreciate and dismissing people as trolls does not address this.

So if you don't want the funds from photo radar to be called a "cash cow" the best way deal with this is to use it only for traffic safety and not for other unrelated things. So this is self inflicted political problem.

I shouldn’t be spending the time writing to respond this (feeding the troll) but here we go.

Two things can be true at the same time.

1) Photo radar reduces speeding and crashes and road deaths. This is cannot be reasonably argued against. The literature/evidence is robust.

Also a real life example in Edmonton: photo radar was curtailed and rates of speeding and roads deaths subsequently increased.

2) Funds generated from photo radar (money collected from people breaking the law and making our streets less enjoyable and more dangerous) were used for initiatives to improve street safety and design and screetscapes (in this instance, patios.)

Now those funds are gone.

Programs like the patio program cost money.

Feel free to argue that the money should come out of general revenues (ie “property taxes”), but recognize that the only reason this discussion is happening and restaurants are having to pay for their patio space is because of decisions made by the UCP.

Downtown Edmonton is no downtown Montreal. We need to create vibrancy and excitement beyond oilers playoff games.

if it's up to me, I would have the City incentivize thsse food establishments rather than charging them fees.

What does photo radar fines have to do with downtown patios? it's the optics.

The city can cut all sorts of programs that are a complete waste of taxpayers money to help manage their budget. But there's zero correlation between these two.

I could care less about the UCP, this is just common sense and I think the City needs to hire a new communications people to explain these things.

If only cutting entire programs could be boiled down to "common sense". These policy decisions are extremely multi-faceted, regardless of what your opinions are.
