Alberta Politics

This is what the Clown Shoes wearing YYC Mayor is preaching…….

“…..property tax bill goes to Edmonton as a transfer payment….”

Is this guy nuts?

He seems to be confusing Edmonton with Alberta, more often people there seem to confuse Calgary with Alberta. Perhaps it depends on which is more politically expedient at the time, but obviously neither is correct.

The City of Edmonton does not get their education tax money, the Provincial government of Alberta does. If we wonder why people are so confused, misleading or confusing statements like this from politicians does not help.

Farkas is not confusing anything. He is saying Edmonton in reference to Alberta which is no different than people in Alberta or any province saying they are tired of sending money to Ottawa.

Obviously they know the City of Ottawa is not benefitting - people mean the Canadian government. In Alberta, people outside YEG often say Edmonton when they mean Alberta government. We're just not used to hearing it.

“They” - as in YYC’ers? Hmmmmm, I’m not so sure…I’m leaning towards this guy being akin to Trump and nothing but misinformation. Do you know the background of Mr.Farkles? Is he a longtime Albertan?

If that is what he means, then he should just darn well say the Government of Alberta!!! Is that so frikkin hard? It is definitely not an "Edmonton provincial government", we actually have ZERO MLA's in this government. So if anything it is more a Calgary provincial government, although oddly they don't want to admit that when they are the ones getting shafted by some of their own UCP MLA's.

It is confusing and wrong to conflate a city with a province and partly explains why Edmonton is often the whipping boy for the rest of the province, we get blamed for what the province does.

Also, in this case he actually he does imply the City of Edmonton is somehow benefiting by having a lower education tax increase than Calgary. Guess all those Calgary UCP MLA's are less effective than our ZERO UCP MLA's.

I agree with @TAS.
Ottawa is the national capital of Canada, and is regarded as such by many Canadians.
Edmonton is the provincial capital of Alberta, and is regarded as such by many Albertans.

Not that hard to figure out, is it?

Once again, the lines of communication have broken down…..we’ve got it figured out smart ass but do they - folks down south including the elected Mayor have it figured out? You’re giving them WAY too MUCH credit for knowing the difference, when me and @David A do know the difference. I would bet my left NUT that Farkleston does think they are equalization payments. He said it, we didn’t, he’s a big boy and should know the difference

Maybe Farkas is a frikkin moron who can not distinguish between a municipality and a province. If so doesn't say much about those who voted for him.

However, more likely it deliberate - blame mythical "Edmonton" because they are afraid to come out and say it is the provincial UCP or blame their own ineffective MLA's.

I don't disagree that saying the "Edmonton provincial government" is a shrewd political move by Farkas.

But the part where he is saying our taxes going to Edmonton, I do get and is a common Alberta reference like Ottawa is nationally.

You are absolutely wrong. He first implies they are over taxed and under represented. He probably knows full well that Edmonton has zero representation but somehow his city is under represented? Alberta is underrepresented in Ottawa but in this instance he is just fanning the flames.
“Nearly half your tax bill goes to Edmonton as a transfer payment.”
Where is the ambiguity in that statement? Typical rhetoric from a lot of the people down there to juice their politicians in giving them more handouts.

One would hope that a mayor would understand taxes before being elected.

Calgary pays more because the assessment base is almost double the size. The assessment base is larger because the City of Calgary has a spending problem and keeps passing along their costs to end users, or eating more debt.

What an idiot.

He is not an idiot he knows what he is doing.
