Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

It’s Not just only WestJet & Air Canada focusing on its main Hubs in 🇨🇦 !

Porter Airlines route its connecting US/International passengers through Ottawa YOW, Toronto YYZ & Montreal YUL ✅.

Air Transat routes its connecting US/ International passengers through Montreal YUL, Toronto YYZ , Quebec City YQB & Halifax YHZ✅.

Flair routes its connecting US/ International passengers through mostly Vancouver YVR & Toronto YYZ✅.

Its not changing anytime soon.
Would you please take your check marks with you back to Calgary? You're tiring enough on Skyscraperpage.

Speaking of Calgary YYC , they get Western Canada’s 🇨🇦 1st nonstop flights ✈️to the Middle East come November 2026 with 4x weekly on Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 .

YYC likely to see a mix of Etihad’s 226 /290 seater 787’s.

WJ to Edmontonians, we are cutting US flights, you get Kamloops, meanwhile Calgary gets an Eithad flight...

That is what they are saying . . . YEG is nothing . . . Calgary = Alberta . . .
WJ is not 'saying' anything. Edmontonians are not using the flights we had, we are losing flights to Phoenix and LA. These are not test locations, these are historical locations where WJ is saying well they're not using them, what are we supposed to do.

I know it's easy to feel victimized with US cancellations but the reality is it's happening everywhere, including Calgary.....
The most recent schedule change saw 1 route suspension and 6 frequency reductions from Edmonton, but 2 suspensions and 15 frequency reductions from Calgary.

Good for Calgary, and crazy that they beat out YVR to get direct flights to the Middle East and Brazil. But it’s ridiculous that YYC gets this many options while YEG can’t get London or Frankfurt. We’re not expecting YEG to be a giant hub airport serving 20 million connecting passengers a year, but we’re a city of 1.7 million people (one of the wealthiest metro areas in Canada relative to our population), with an even larger catchment area of people in central and northern Alberta (notably Jasper) and northern Canada. Long-haul routes to key Trans-Atlantic hubs in London (it could be any one of their six airports) and Frankfurt should be the bare minimum for us.

(Would be nice to also get more key American East Coast flight connections like New York, Boston and DC when the political climate gets better, but I understand why it’s unrealistic for that to be in the cards right now).

Once things get back to normal in the US, we'll get some of those US routes back. All cities are struggling with a drop in traffic to the US, and rightly so. International flights are another matter, I get the feeling cities like Edmonton, Ottawa and Winnipeg are going to get squeezed out. We will do well for domestic, and not too bad for US flights, but I honestly don't see international increasing much beyond maybe a direct to London. The way AC and WS have arranged things, it makes sense for them to feed everything through their hubs.

Exactly. These flights will come back once the US shitstorm is over.

YEG is done!!! Terrible management doing nothing to get international flights other than stupid social media campaigns that do nothing.
What really can YEG do though? If the NDP gets elected maybe we can get them to subsidize flights like the province of Manitoba did with a couple of their Winnipeg to US flights. Outside of trying something like that, it's 100% airline economics. If I owned Westjet I would probably do the same thing. If I'm Westjet when those new dreamliners arrive, I start looking at Edmonton to London. Right now with limited wide bodies for AC and WS, they won't look at Edmonton anytime soon. Westjet is also getting a pile of new Max 8's, so I'd expect maybe some new Edmonton US routes.

I think YEG needs to continue to diversify (it has). What about cargo and the growth of Nisku and other commercial parks?
