Edmonton's Population

Maybe I'm just thinking of Pie in the Sky types of predictions but I do think that if we did get a high-speed rail between Edmonton and Calgary it would all of a sudden turn two fairly big cities into a mega region that could attract far more people. In my perfect world, Edmonton and Calgary would continue to grow as it has been growing, but because of a high-speed train traveling between Edmonton to Red Deer to Calgary and back, I would love to see City of Red Deer really start to Boom in population due to the fact that they can have a cheaper place to buy rent or build and yet still work in either Edmonton or Calgary and easily get there quickly. Also some companies could potentially headquarter in Red Deer and have employees simply commute into Red Deer if they lived in Edmonton or Calgary. Maybe this idea is far fetched, but I think the desirability of our two major cities would be increased significantly if time between each would be minimal instead of what it is right now.
Well said!

Yes, the Alberta corridor is beginning to become a thing, but good inter city rail service would really boost it a lot. All three cities would benefit but in particular, Red Deer could benefit tremendously because of its location.

At the rate we’re growing, we’ll surpass Ottawa’s CMA this year, moving us into the top 5 metros of the country. Surprisingly, we’re also not far off from Calgary, both in growth rate and raw numbers, although our CMA is larger in area and theirs misses a few population regions.

Now about that new hospital…

Will Edmonton pass Ottawa this year? I imagine it will be soon.

I didn't realize how close Regina and Kelowna are in population. Makes me wonder if interior BC could support a CFL team.

Canada should have two more 1+ million cities soon, with Winnipeg and Quebec joining. Even Hamilton is not too far behind.

Halifax has been dying for a CFL team since God-knows how long.

Yes, I also noticed Winnipeg is getting close and Quebec is not far behind either. While we are at it, how about Victoria for a CFL team?

Isn't its CMA population bigger than Kelowna's and there are other good size communities on Vancouver Island too.
