Federal Politics

Just rumour mill - heard regarding Edmonton's upcoming Riverbend byelection from Ryan Jespersen show.

Possible Conservative candidate:
Tim Cartmell

Possible liberal candidate:
Current NDP mla Rakhi Pancholi
Cartmell seems like a shoe-in for the CPC and could potentially snag an easy win. I'm a bit more skeptical about Pancholi giving up her position as Deputy Leader of the AB NDP to become a Liberal MP.

She would have a LOT more to lose in this scenario.

I agree Cartmell would be a good potential candidate here, although not so sure about his chances of winning. It would probably still be a close race either way.

I also feel it makes more sense for Pancholi to stay where she is, it is a good position now.

Western alienation has declined to a four-year low: poll

OTTAWA — A new poll shows that tensions with Ottawa are declining in all four western provinces, with perceptions of the federal government improving especially rapidly in Alberta.

The poll, taken by Pollara Strategic Insights, finds that half of Western Canadians feel the federal government pays attention to their province, the highest result in four years. This includes 53 per cent of British Columbians, 51 per cent of Albertans and 49 per cent of Manitobans.

The one outlier was Saskatchewan, where just 36 per cent said they felt the same way.

Even so, perceptions of Ottawa ticked upward in all four provinces. In Alberta, feelings toward Ottawa improved by 13 points from a low of 38 per cent in late 2023.

The Carney affect. Or anybody but Trudeau affect. Or some of both.

Edit: or the Trump effect - how could I forget

It has often been said that one of the most crucial things for any PM to do is to maintain or improve national unity, so this poll seems to be a good sign that what is being done currently is working.

Leadership contender @HMcPhersonNDPsponsors House petition targeting Jewish charity co-founded by @ChaptersIndigo CEO, seeks screening of all people from Israel for complicity in war crimes. https://blacklocks.ca/ndper-targets-jewish-charity/ #cdnpoli @IsraelinCanadad

This is the hateful anti-semite with an astonishing level of historical and geo political knowledge that the "progressive and educated" people of Edmonton Stathcona voted for to represent them in the House of Commons. Sadly, not surprising.

Interesting and unfortunate story of someone with several guns on property, poorly stored, they get stolen, it's not reported for months, but in meantime one of the guns is used in a mass shooting in Edmonton, then another turns up a year later in a routine traffic stop, and other guns still at large as well as two of the people involved in the crime.

Are you joking? Not everything is anti-semetic. Imagine being angry about this? Palestinians are being exterminated right now. I'm certain you would like some screening of Germans being part of the Nazi party during the holocaust in the 1930's if they were coming over to Canada. Israel is the bad guy. Sorry bro.

You're right, not everything is anti-semitic.

But regardless of what's taking place in Israel and in Gaza - and what's been taking place in the region since 1948 - that doesn't mean that nothing is anti-semitic.

Anti-semitism, unfortunately, is alive and well in Canada including, although certainly not exclusively, within the federal NDP party.

My issue is that any criticism aimed at Israel is often immediately labelled antisemitic, which I think is disingenuous, cynical, and dangerous. There is a big difference between calling out a nation's government and its policies and hating its people, but that nuance has been lost lately in all the yelling.
