Yes, some areas of downtown at certain times of the day are improving a lot. You generally don't see as many homeless people during the day in the CBD, but as it has gotten colder recently I have noticed a few more.

Hopefully the new space will be done soon and will help. It is not only very negative for downtown, particularly Chinatown, to have so many people out wandering around, but it is also inhumane for them especially when it is colder.
Talking with one service that I do volunteer work with and they indicated their numbers were down a bit. The dinner service we did 2 weeks ago however had more people. Normally from about 90-120 this time was 138.

Went to the okimaw peyesew kamik (King Thunderbird Centre) open house today. Very impressed with the facility, its clearly much better built to purpose than the old banana warehouse. I took some pictures but took fewer inside than I intended as there were alot of community members around and I didn't want to be disrespectful.

The building has had deep Indigenous input: from the design, the open lighting style and outdoor access, focus on ceremony and healing spaces, and decorations throughout. Its clear alot of thought went into the building. 75% of Boyle Street community members are Indigenous so that makes sense. There is a main atrium in the middle that is open to the ceiling and then spaces around the sides ("Dens" as they call them) for people to gather and receive supports. It really felt welcoming.

The main entrance is on the east side in the small park with a long walkway to the main doors, exit is on the north side into the private parking lot shared with the housing facility. Definitely designed to give the community space to gather without being on public land/sidewalks and as far away from neighboring businesses as possible. The space has actually been open to community since November 11th which gives you a sense of how much less gathering outside the building is happening.

I like the building, and it's definitely gonna be a game changer, but couldn't we have made something less grey?
