Sourcing is the only thing that I can think of.

But how this becomes almost decade long blows my mind, but i'm without full information here.

I wonder why the delays.

  • With the final design of the new Chinatown Gate now complete, the project team will be hosting two public information sessions to share details and renderings of the new gate.
    • The first session will be held November 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The second session will be held November 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both sessions will be held at the TD Explorer Room on the second floor of the Stanley A. Milner Library in downtown Edmonton.
    • There will not be a formal presentation, so people can come and go at any time.
    • Project staff will be available to answer questions and share information about the design.
    • A small 3D model of the new gate will also be available to view. The same information will be available at both sessions, so there is no need to attend both.

I appreciate the openness on projects, but is it really necessary to host an information session for this? Just put it up already! lol

I'm sure there'll be the usual NIMBY and parking experts who may want to kill it, not to mention a few design and construction gurus who will want to give their two cents worth.

Chinatown Gate Design and Construction

A new gate will be built in the downtown core on 97 Street between Jasper Avenue and 101A Avenue, where the original Edmonton Chinatown began.

Public Art Call

The new Chinatown Gate will feature 4 art panels – 2 facing north and 2 facing south. The City of Harbin is providing artwork for 2 of the panels. The Project Team is seeking a local artist or artist team residing in the greater Edmonton area to create a design for the other 2 art panels. A Request for Proposals is now open. The deadline for applications is noon on January 9, 2026. Read the details on how to apply.

Project Information

The new gate will replace the original version that was located on 102 Avenue. The original gate was dismantled and put into storage in 2017 to accommodate the construction of the Valley Line Southeast LRT.
In 1987, the original gate officially opened to commemorate the sister-city relationship between Edmonton and the City of Harbin in China’s Heilongjiang Province. Edmonton’s Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) partnered with the City for the establishment of the gate, and for 30 years it stood as a representation of the friendship between the two cities.
The City of Edmonton has worked with the City of Harbin and Edmonton’s Chinese community on the design of the new gate. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026 and be completed in early 2027.
