The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

I'll repeat it again, but we really need a rapid-response switch to clear shared-use paths along arterial roads and heavily-used areas (eg. near LRT stations) ASAP after significant snow dumps like this. The amount of snow we got, plus drifts from the wind have made every uncleared path almost...

Contractor-maintained (for Capital Line LRT): vs. City-maintained, on the same stretch of pathway: Same here, contractor-maintained in the foreground, city-maintained past the "End Construction" sign. We can do things better.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Yeah, it is unavoidable in certain spots, but the city's snow clearing standards/procedures for their MUPs sure don't help. Windrows left to melt onto the 2-5cm of snowpack lead to a skating rink (or a significantly deep puddle) more often than not in shaded areas. There doesn't really seem to...

But a significant portion of roads are bone dry.

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I feel like there needs to be standards set, similar to snow clearing, with regard to icy city-maintained sidewalks during freeze-thaw cycles.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

I’ve emailed about similar issues like snow clearing in the past, but never received a response. I suspect he’s been inundated by similar things in the last few months.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

And the kicker is that these are all city-maintained paths, which were cleared to standard. It’s fine when the temperatures are consistent, but when it gets warm, this is what happens. They’re probably sick of seeing 311 reports on these same areas every year, but these conditions are downright...

Some great new luge tracks around my neighbourhood.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

I always wonder if the guidelines/standards put into place at a time when the freeze-thaw cycles were less extreme? If so, it's time to review.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

While a large number of roads are now down to bare pavement, this is what pedestrians and active transport commuters have to deal with.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

It's mainly the paths/sidewalks that are cleared by the city down to a packed surface with a few cm of snowpack (not to bare surface). The weather yesterday was warm enough that most of the freezing rain melted/evaporated during the day, from those who cleared their walks down to the surface...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Well, unsurprisingly, all the shared-use paths around me are now doubling as skating rinks. Sigh. Nice weather, though.

Yep, and then there are the few weeks where they become skating rinks during the March/April thaw, especially the parts that refreeze overnight and in the shade. Meanwhile the residents/businesses/construction areas who have maintained a clear walk all winter will be fine.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

I've been away for the last few weeks and in the meantime it looks like they've cleared all the sidewalks around me to a double-wide standard, including the area above, so kudos for that. Unfortunately, they also took out a light post in the process. Hard not to think that if this had been...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

I've always thought the same. It's aggravating to see tire tracks made by private snow-clearing equipment driven through unplowed, city-maintained portions of a pathway, have them just do their portion, then leave. Extra salt in the wound when it it goes on for days while the city portion gets...
