LRT Safety

I'd like to see the police arrest open drug users ever. Or even just show up.
The same question was asked to the new Chief. He explained that since COVID, minor possessions of illegal drugs is not being prosecuted by the courts. They can fine them the $25 under the public spaces bylaw but that's about it. And ask them to move along or if someone needs help get them to the necessary support services. In the future, once there's somewhere to take someone, they will be able to detain people under the new Compassionate Care Act.

If the Compassionate Care Act can find a way to thread the needle between obvious Charter violations and legitimate help being provided, I think it could significantly help downtown. Continuing to do nothing just isn't enough.

Another Edmonton Story... I was coming out of City Hall when across 104 Ave roughly sidewalk adjacent to where RAM was to be built (still Post Office at the time) two individuals were walking towards each other. One was a stumble-y drunk who was meandering all over the sidewalk roughly headed eastward. The other was an elderly man who walked with the support of a (hickory?) cane headed westward. The drunk at the point of intersection pushed the elderly man to the ground all the while cursing a searingly blue streak at the old man. The old man with some visible effort got to his feet and laid a cane-thrashing on the drunk the likes of which would be record-book worthy. By the time I got across the street to inspect the situation close-up -- old man injured in any way?, drunk surviving? -- I shouted to someone coming out of the Post Office to call an ambulance for the passed-out drunk. Without the benefit of follow-up I wondered if the drunk, when and if he survived, would have any remembrance of the happening that put him in the hospital.

Hopefully the drunk guy remembered, because he got what he deserved and if he did remember perhaps it kept him from repeating his bad behavior again.

This is also a good reminder that anti social behavior is not a new thing, and while there is more of it now and it gets more coverage, bad things happen. I hope the senior recently attacked will be ok and they catch those guys.

Sure……love how they spin doctored the KPI %’s as if it makes a frickin’ difference…..bottom line - are there more fentanyl hunchers doing “their thing” all over DT? Yes indeed……

I have seldom seen a police officer walking downtown in years and no a quick drive by or responding to a call does not count.

I'm not sure if they are afraid or find it too unpleasant to deal with all the problems, but one of the reasons for all the problems downtown is a lack of a regular police presence.

A miracle. 2 cops out in the wild.

Not a miracle: both the south and north entrances to bay enterprise on 104st clogged with druggies…

Officers came on the train and removed a homeless person thankfully.

I think EPS still has cops assigned to an ECC Mall beat (can't recall if ECC pays for this, but I'd imagine so?). This would be a couple of them doing their regular lap with ECC security. Whenever I'm out that way I see these patrols, with more cops patrolling alongside security inside.
