I don't know if the critics are all of a certain political leaning, I doubt it. Although I do agree about being more critical of the library.

Interestingly, Calgary and Ottawa which are similar size cities did a good job with their new libraries. I don't think their civic governments are not that much different than ours politically.

Our library is horrible and embarrassing. Calgary’s is beautiful and world class. 0 defence of it from me.

I would have preferred all the same effort and money be put into this strip mall, but it just not be faux architecture with an embarrassing mismatch of a name. There’s more than 2 options. Just cause one criticizes this fake style design, doesn’t mean one wishes we had the brick still.

It’s like those who hate on those of us disliking Regency’s beacon tower in holyrood. “Better than a pit.” Sure, it still sucks though as a tower.

People dislike fake. That’s not a new idea. This feels like a movie set more than a genuine attempt at historic architectural design. That’s the issue

But we mostly have neglected and torn down what little historic design we have here. I think some here people just hate anything that is isn't modern.

You can build more historical looking stuff without it feeling fake and kitschy.

Perhaps, although I ready don't find this to be bad. I doubt people here are generally inclined to make the effort to make anything more historical.

This development is well-executed and provides something interesting in the city. The developments that this was being compared to in the video appeared to be multi-billion dollar projects. It seems a bit weird to even try to compare them. But a project like this is likely to push up the standard of other developments in the area. If it was a cookie-cutter stripmall, it wouldn't have been chirped in a Youtube video by someone with an axe to grind, but the city would also be worse off for it.

^How could the developer have 'flipped' the building over?! This was not a new build. It was an extensive rebuild, using an existing building footprint.

I'm not saying they should've, but rather pointing out how people would be swooning over it if it had been the case.

My only issue with this development is the front parking lot. Flip the building over and put it in the back and everyone would be commending it.
I said the same thing before I found out they'd used the existing structure to build it. I agree though. Had that been the case, opinions on it would be very different. Maybe one day in the future they can eliminate the parking lot, add a new structure and make it a mini, walkable street/plaza.
