Work is once again underway on the historic Strathcona Hotel, seven months after the 128-year-old building was damaged in a fire started during original restoration work.
Work crews could be seen removing the existing roof of the building last week, which suffered the heaviest damage when the fire broke out on the top floor back in March.
Beljan Development purchased the building in 2018, and worked with Hodgson Schilf Evans Architects to restore the aging structure and convert the former hotel into offices and retail spaces. Contractors working on the building sparked a fire in the roof insulation in April, which had not been sufficiently extinguished and flared up later in the evening. Fire crews were able to contain the fire and save much of the building, though renovation plans had been set back significantly as a result.
The restarting of renovation efforts is welcome news to the area, as Beljan's restoration efforts are expected to bring new economic opportunities to Old Strathcona, as well as breathing new life to the beloved "Strath" (or "Strat" depending on your age) for many more years to come.
SkyriseEdmonton will continue to follow the progress of this project. More information and photos can be found in our project Database. Do you have memories of "The Strath" you'd like to share, or thoughts on the restoration? Leave a comment below, or join the conversation in our discussion Forum.
