Exactly two months since our last update, and cladding work has now reached the brim upon Hat at Five Corners. The 24-storey mixed use high-rise by Cidex Group and NORR Architects has gone a long way towards transforming Edmonton's long overlooked Five Corners district, just east of the city centre, its planned retail podium to bring cohesion to an otherwise unruly, five-way intersection.

While the usual squabbles persist on our Forum about the such aesthetic concerns, such as those to do with the tower's use of spandrel, the fact remains that this will be a highly positive, transformative development for the neighbourhood. The large, three-storey podium base will be lined with ground-floor retail, which, in addition to the imminent arrival of hundreds of new residents, will breathe new energy and life into the district.

Viewed from afar, Hat at Five Corners appears to have staked out a large part of the local skyline, its mass, volume, and height striking an impressive figure over the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, down at street level, it would appear that it will still be some time before the retail podium receives its cladding.

For while no recent photos from the base of the tower exist (above from July), we have it on good authority that little else has taken place progress-wise upon the podium since. Once complete, Hat at Five Corners will be a fine addition to the east side of downtown.

SkyrsieEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
