A month since our last update, and the 43-storey, 138-metre, Encore Tower has now topped off. Moreover, as the glass curtain wall continues to climb the tower, work has simultaneously begun on the brick detailing work down at the podium level.

Designed by Dub Architects for Westrich Pacific, the glass-clad Encore Tower stands upon what will be a a more traditionally clad, two-storey retail base. Set to be finished in a mix of brick, glass, and cement, the base will adopt a look more in line with Edmonton's old stock of early 20th century commercial buildings.

As such, the brick cladding work now underway appears to be making ample use of distressed red bricks, the selection of which was no doubt conceived as a way to add a historical touch to the otherwise thoroughly modern structure. While reviews on our Forum remain mixed, with some decrying the undeniable "faux-ness" of pre-distressed bricks, there are others who are more or less at peace with the old-timey aesthetic.

Moreover, it will be the tower, not the base, which will primarily define the structure, its height and volume to be recognizable from far across the city. To this end, it can be said that Encore Tower will be a fine addition, the project a key part of the recent condo population shift towards Edmonton's traditional downtown core.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
