Three weeks since our last update, and excavation work at the Centre West Conversion and Expansion project in the Government District has proceeded at a brisk pace. Excavators have now dug down several levels below grade, pushing through the frozen soil in an effort to provide a firm footing for the multi-million dollar retrofit and expansion by Strategic Group and KENNEDY

Situated along Capital Boulevard, just south of Jasper Ave, the 70s-era, 12-storey former government office block will soon be totally redone, its residential conversion effort to include the addition of 154 units. Adding to the total, the 6-storey new build will bring a further 60 units online, for a combined 214 units.

Soon enough, the pitter-patter of feet both big and small through the vicinity will work to transform the long-held view of the Government District as little more than a refuge for the 9-4:30 crowd. With more than 300 new residents due by 2020, the Centre West Conversion and Expansion project will soon become a hive of activity both during and after business hours.

The two towers will be connected via a common podium, which according to renderings of the project, appear to be designed for the inclusion of retail and other services. Close to the core, transit, and the delights of Jasper Ave, the Centre West Conversion and Expansion development promises to be a sure bet among government types and downtown lovers alike.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
