A month since we last checked in at the Centre West Conversion and Expansion now underway in the Goverment District, and the project has now moved into the demolition phase, clearing the site ahead of construction. Located along Capital Boulevard just south of Jasper Ave in downtown Edmonton, the former government office block will be given new life thanks to a transformative multimillion dollar retrofit by Strategic Group and KENNEDY

The 12-storey Centre West building was built in 1976, its concrete exterior in dire need of a refresh. The recladding effort will also include significant interior modifications, the former office block to be transformed into a 154-unit residential tower.

Beyond the conversion, the project will also involve a sizeable expansion component, the addition of a new, 6-storey, 60-unit residential mid-rise block to grow the total number of units to 214. Set to rise on the adjacent parking lot, the addition requires the demolition of the old annex section of the 12-storey tower as viewed in the images above.

Moving around to the front of the development, the arrival of construction materials to the build site represent a clear indication that shoring work will commence shortly. Once complete, the development will be renamed as "Capital," in recognition of the site's former use, the residential transformation to include the addition of private balconies and at least one rooftop deck.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
