Coming soon to Alberta Avenue, ArtsCommon 118 by the Edmonton Community Development Company (CDC) is set to kickstart a new phase of creative development in north-central Edmonton. Comprised of two four-storey structures, what is billed as a flagship project for the CDC is slated to become a creative arts hub, complete with 78 affordable live-work studios for artists and other local businesses.

ArtsCommon 118, named for its proposed location at the corner of 118 Ave NW and 92 St NW, will feature two floors of market space, a community arts coffee shop, and a 200-seat performance space, overtop of which the aforementioned 78 live-work studios will be placed. Viewed below, the inclusion of an urban, rooftop farm and greenhouse feature will provide fresh produce for residents and the marketplace inside, the green roof itself to add to the sustainability of the development as a whole.

Adding a bit of celebrity brand recognition to the project, the proposed Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SMSoM) will provide free access to instruments and musical instruction to disadvantaged youth. Furthering the development's socially progressive ethos, the 2,000 square-foot industrial kitchen will help fuel the needs of the Carrot Community Coffee House.

Sustainable and socially conscious, the marriage of progressive urbanism and creative space will likely be a win for the Alberta Avenue district and broader city as Edmonton continues its reinvention as a progressive urban centre.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
