Another milestone in the construction of ICE District has been reached with the structural topping-off of the JW Marriott Tower, reaching its final height of approximately 191 metres.
An event was held on the 46th floor of the 56-story tower on Tuesday, commemorated by a ceremonial "topping" by Mayor Don Iveson, Katz Group VP Glen Scott, and Marriott Hotels VP Martin Stitt, of a cake modeled after the building.
The hotel - which we toured while under construction in September of last year - is the third of the JW Marriott brand to open in Canada. It occupies the first 22 floors of the building with 346 guest rooms, 22,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, and a 10,500 square-foot ballroom.
The 31 floors above the hotel contain 262 condominium units, dubbed The Legends Private Residences, which are approximately 90% sold.
The Hariri Pontarini-designed building currently stands as Edmonton's tallest building, having surpassed the roof height of longtime record holder Manulife Place - which was completed in 1983 to a height of 146 metres - as well as the 2011-completed EPCOR Tower's spires which rise to 149 metres.
The record is not expected to last much longer, however; Stantec Tower next door continues to rise at a rapid pace and will soon surpass the JW Marriott as it reaches skyward to its final 251-metre height.
The JW Marriott Hotel is expected to open in Q1 of 2019, and owners of The Legends Private Residences are expected to begin occupancy beginning in Q2.
