A $40 million project at the University of Alberta will see more students living on campus by the fall semester. Now in the final leg of its construction, Lister 5 Residence will soon offer coed living spaces to approximately 520 first-year students. Located east of 117th Street, the L-shaped building features connections to the existing four Lister towers, which currently provide roughly 1,850 existing spaces.

The expansion project supports the university's goal of providing guaranteed housing to all first-year students. The project is aiming to earn three Green Globes, an online rating and certification tool for environmentally sound buildings.

Construction of the Diamond Schmitt-designed facility has been underway since October 2016. Since then, the five-storey project has topped out, and cladding has begun application. Curtain wall glazing has been erected on vertical exterior elements, while bright white panelling is being affixed to the majority of the structure. Rectangular black window frames sporadically add contrast to the facade.
