An abandoned construction site in The Quarters that has sat vacant for years will see new life in the new year. Cidex Group, a Calgary-based development company, now owns the property and plans to install a 24-storey apartment building on the trapezoidal-shaped land. After being granted a development permit in the fall, the project slated for the corner of 95th Street and Jasper Avenue now has a name and a start date.
To be called 'Hat at Five Corners,' the building will contain 199 rental units, from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Ground-level retail and underground parking are also included in the scheme. A building permit filed for December, and a recent CBC interview with Cidex's Sarah Itani, reveals that construction is scheduled to commence in January.
Besides a blurry image and a marketing sketch, renderings showcasing the design of the building have largely eluded online channels. But the available materials depict a building with similarities — particularly the expanses of glass and the balcony placement — to a Cidex Group project in Calgary, which has also been dubbed 'The Hat.' NORR Architects is the team behind the design of both the Edmonton and Calgary projects.
The previous proposal for the property would have seen the construction of a two-tower residential development. But as the 28-storey inaugural tower was progressing with below-grade work, they were reprimanded by the city for failing to meet deadlines, and the developer abandoned the site.
