ArtsCommon 118 is a flagship project that will transform Edmonton’s Alberta Avenue district - a neighbourhood that has struggled with inner-city challenges and is now in the process of renewal.
  • 78 affordable live-work studios for artists;
  • two floors of market space for artists and other local businesses;
  • a community arts coffee shop as the district’s arts and culture and communitybuilding hive;
  • performance, exhibition, and collaborative spaces for up to 200 people;
  • social enterprise development and job creation;
  • urban, roof-top farming in a partnership with Northlands;
  • free instruction and instruments to disadvantaged youth and seniors via the Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SMSoM);
  • a 2,000 square foot industrial kitchen to foster social enterprise, encourage community use, and meet the needs of the Carrot Community Coffee House;
  • office and program space for non-profits;
  • the marriage of economic and social inclusion goals (e.g. farmers and night markets);
  • a desire to build green infrastructure (i.e. net zero); and
  • operational sustainability.

'Could be the tipping point': New food-arts-community hub planned for Alberta Avenue
Alberta Avenue residents celebrated a new vision for the ArtsCommon 118 Wednesday, hoping this new food-arts-community hub will finally be what tips the scale for good in the troubled neighbourhood.

It’s the first project for Edmonton’s new public developer, a community-focused development agency now operating at arm’s length from the city but with public land and $10 million in donated capital.

They’re planning 78 live-work studio spaces for artists, a community coffee shop, a commercial kitchen available for rent 24 hours a day to local food trucks and startup market vendors, a black box theatre and an African night market.

The Sarah McLachlan School of Music is hoping to take over one floor in the twin four-storey buildings, and Northlands is making plans to build greenhouses on the roof, expanding its agricultural offerings and expertise in vertical farming.

“This could be the tipping point,” said Arts on the Avenue director Christy Morin, describing how all these uses can come together to create a strong hub in the neighbourhood with positive, community-building activity around the clock.

ArtsCommon 118
We are working on an adapted version of ArtsCommon 118. Government changes provincially and federal election results pose challenges to bringing the original vision to life. Instead of giving up, we are looking for an alternative path forward that will allow the Edmonton CDC and our partner, Arts on the Ave, move forward with capital development.

Over the next few weeks we will be considering new design options, the possibility of phasing construction over time, and ensuring that what we develop is sustainable. We will be reporting on this work in December as well as engaging Alberta Avenue community members about the adapted model.
