Anyone tried to walk here from Westmount Transit Centre or Mall? Big failure! There is a narrow winding sidewalk, but most people take the direct route and risk their lives walking with cars right behind the school.
Definitely feels parking lot oriented. Connection to transit, school, and 111ave is weak.

I would love to start seeing more “pedestrian route first” thinking in how we design.

Even in Abbotsford this weekend, I noticed how a basic strip mall parking lot had all continuous crossings through it, often very direct, from the parking lot to buildings.

We need to standardize that in a climate with snow, ice, and slush that makes walking through parking lots a mess. Pedestrian walkways and raised crossings that double as speed humps should be the norm.

Even the brewery distract barely does this well here. But Abbotsford can…

Imagine having to walk across a parking lot!? How do you get from your car to Safeway or Canadian tire? There's literally a sidewalk in the picture you posted.

Good news. There is a sidewalk all the way from the transit centre to the front door, complete with para ramps.

A great example where all crossings should have be level/continuous instead of curb cuts. HUGE difference maker for accessibility, safety, and comfort.

I literally needed someone to carry my stroller 2ft in the air with me through the parking lot when this first opened as the parking lot was so bad. Wouldn’t be an issue with a simple design change.

Bit of a missed opportunity to redesign that road to a more pedestrian/cyclist friendly route, was a mess during before/lunch/after school rush to Westmount back in the day. Car drove into my knee at the crosswalk there in High School, which I (naturally) attribute to the downfall to my would-be professional sports career (sad).

Is there examples of that in the city already? Seems tricky in edmonton’s climate when you think of snow removal. I’m just imagining the amount of maintenance, especially if it’s pavers that keep getting ripped out by inattentive snow ploughs

Brewery district has some. Lots of new neighbourhood renewals feature them. 132ave. The ones I saw in abbotsford were literally just concrete sidewalk and subtle slopes.
