I disagree, YYC's Fireplace will merely be an "add-on" to the concert circuit. By no means will they "steal" away any concerts away from Rogers. YEG is a money making machine for the scene. Do you honestly and truly feel that the "Fireplace" will be the sole and only destination on the concert circuit in AB? You must live in YYC to have that uninformed opinion....

It absolutely stands to reason that Edmonton will see some reduction. Right now we are benefiting greatly from Calgary not being able to host and them coming up here to see concerts. Once that changes I suspect we may see less multiple nights here and even a few misses. We are still a great market but incredibly hard to not see an impact here,

With your logic, what's the point of doing shows across Canada - when you can do 10 of them in Toronto,......give me a break....or even better, "Hey we just sold 18,000 tickets in YEG, naw - cancel the show - we're gonna do 2 in YYC for 24,000 tickets for 2 shows....."

The multiple nights thing will hurt as that was helping drive some hotel stays.

As for zero misses, we will see. Calgary has shown itself to be incredibly ruthless and aggressive and I can see them trying to entice promoters to just park there for a couple of nights.
 
Just a small note that Calgary has an AHL team alongside their NHL and WHL teams. That's atleast an extra 36 nights a year their arena is unavailable for concerts compared to Rogers.

I still think we will lose some concerts, but retain the majority. I could also see Calgary's larger international visibility leading to some acts that have been doing the Montreal - Toronto - Vancouver run to start adding Calgary.

Go ahead and disagree all you want, but it's already happened. Tyler Childers played the Saddledome last summer and skipped Edmonton on tour planning. He could've 100% sold out a show here at Rogers as well, but the tour was planned for one date in Alberta, and it was easier for them to do Calgary than Edmonton.

No apologies necessary… the metric itself is a useful one and you are not the first one and probably won’t be the last one to misinterpret or misrepresent it. When trying to make comparisons between different types of events (hockey vs concerts vs residents vs workers) it can be useful, simply not in isolation.

As an example, my guess is that 9 sold out Garth Brooks concerts add a lot more new economic activity to downtown than 9 regular season Oilers games, just as 3 or 4 Stanley Cup final games would add a lot more than 3 or 4 regular season or pre season games.
 
Regardless if Rogers Place loses concerts to the new Calgary arena or not, we will still get the big concerts at Commonwealth Stadium. Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U2, David Bowie, AC/DC, Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses, Garth Brooks, and maybe Taylor Swift.

Absolutely. Commonwealth is the only reason that Edmonton is on any stadium touring map.

Who? So did Motley Crue for the Stampede.....8,000 tickets....Missed YEG but YEG only misses out for piddly ass concerts

So you're saying YEG is already "losing" out on concerts to the Saddledump? So when the Fireplace opens - we will Really lose out on concerts at that point? I'm missing your logic?

You have not convinced anyone on here that YYC will take away concerts from YEG - bottom line....show me in a year Mr. Concert the number........
 
Well in the case of Motley Crue they were not on tour at that time. This was part of a Calgary Stampede event and in the world of concerts would have been considered a one-off. Always remember that most of the time concerts will make two stops in Alberta one in Calgary one in Edmonton or vice versa. The only real reason why a band might bypass Edmonton is scheduling of their tour and of Rogers Place. The fact that there will be a proper venue in Calgary may actually increase the amount of concert tours coming through Alberta because now shows will be able to have two venues they can play at, rather than just one, as it is right now. Concert tours really love coming to Edmonton and larger shows are able to come here while they cannot go to the Saddledome because of its limitations. Definitely as well, with that many more dates eaten up because of the different hockey teams there could be some shows that still May avoid Calgary because they can't work it into their tour schedule for a empty date at the new Arena
