The City of Edmonton will soon be the third city in North America to have an International Cycling Union (UCI)-sanctioned 250-metre indoor velodrome, as plans progress for the new Coronation Community Recreation Centre.

The new $116-million facility, a design collaboration between Dub Architects, Hughes Condon Marler Architects (HCMA), and FaulknerBrowns Architects, will also contain a 400-metre running track, a fitness centre, multipurpose rooms, and a child play space.

The centre is set to be built in Coronation Park between the architecturally award-winning Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre and the modernist Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium, currently undergoing restoration. An indoor connection between the Peter Hemingway and the new facility is also planned.

City Council approved funding to move forward with construction of the facility in the 2019 budget, and the project is now progressing through the development pipeline, with a (closed-door) pre-application presentation to the Edmonton Design Committee tentatively scheduled for March 17.
