The City of Edmonton is holding an open house next week to show residents more details about a proposed rezoning and redevelopment in Boyle Street for a six-story, 75-unit affordable housing building, and to gather feedback on the plan.

Located on 91 Street just north of Jasper Avenue and nestled between numerous existing apartment buildings of various sizes, the project is currently dubbed River Lot 20 after the historical settlement plan subdivisions surveyed in 1882.

Designed by Next Architecture, an Urban Design Brief submitted to the city as part of the rezoning process shows a fairly modest design, with a focal point on the south end of a large glass volume for the resident amenities that faces the river valley. The building includes patios for ground-floor residents and a rooftop amenity space.

The application is not without controversy, however; the site is currently home to the 1906-built West Residence which, according to the Edmonton Historical Board, is one of Edmonton's few surviving Queen Anne homes and was named for William West, one of Edmonton’s earliest residents.

At a September presentation to the Edmonton Design Committee, members of the development team indicated that the house is in very poor condition and "on the verge of collapse." The building is not currently protected by any historical designation.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10 from 6 to 8 pm, at the Boyle St. Plaza (Willow Room), 9538 103a Avenue NW.

SkyriseEdmonton will continue to follow this project as it progresses. More information can be found in the project Database. What do you think of the proposed redevelopment? Leave a comment below, or join the conversation in our Forum.
