Good news for theatre goers and heritage enthusiasts across the city, as news has broken that the $11.5 million rebuild of the historic 1938 Roxy Theatre has received an additional $2.5 million from Heritage Canada. The project will now go to tender immediately with work expected to begin as early as the spring.

Following the investment of $2.5 million from the Province, and an additional $500,000 from the federal and municipal governments early last year, the additional funds have now put the Theatre Network in a position to bring the rehabilitation and rebirth of their home to fruition. Having been completely destroyed by fire back in 2015, the long-awaited return of the Roxy Theatre marks a special moment for many Edmontonians who have grown up with this landmark for 80 years.

Located along 124 Street in Westmount, the Roxy Theatre has been a community fixture for nearly a century. Thus its return, now tentatively scheduled for 2020, will be a welcome reunion - the gap long left in the streetscape to be filled with happy theatre goers and fellow patrons of the arts.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
