A hip Quebec-based hotelier is looking to expand one of its brands into Edmonton, in style.

Montreal's Groupe Germain is partnering with developers Urban Capital and Limak Investments to develop the 35-story Mackenzie Tower in downtown Edmonton's popular 4th Street Promenade, which will include the group's second ALT+ branded hotel.

In addition to the hotel and its estimated 156 rooms, the Lemay Michaud-designed tower will also include a restaurant on the ground floor, and 136 residential condominiums. The tower will be set back on a three-storey podium designed to scale with the surrounding historical warehouse buildings.

The site of the proposed tower currently consists of a small surface parking lot, and a two-storey building constructed in the late 1940s. Though the building is not considered to have historical value, and as such is not protected like many of its neighbours, it is currently home to the Blue Plate Diner, a perennial favourite of many Edmontonians. The Blue Plate's owners are reportedly debating what the future holds for the popular restaurant.

Though not much else is known about the proposal yet, an Edmonton Design Committee presentation has been tentatively scheduled for January the 15th, where more information about the urban design aspects will become available.
