Set to become the heart of The Quarters Downtown, the Five Corners is already the site of one major development, and another may be just around the corner.

Cidex Group's Hat @ Five Corners project is now just over halfway to its full 24-storey height, with window wall glazing now starting to appear on the lower tower levels. The building is rising prominently on the northeast corner of Jasper Avenue and 95 Street, an area earmarked for higher-density development in The Quarters Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan approved in 2009.

On the other side of Jasper Avenue, demolition has begun this week on a derelict landmark, the old Chinatown Mall, better known as the home of the late Mirama Dining Lounge. Cidex Group purchased the property this year and has expressed intention to develop another project on the site.

The Quarters Downtown plan is the City of Edmonton's attempt to guide and encourage development in the area east of the existing downtown core, which is currently mostly made up of surface parking lots. This latest investment by Cidex Group will no doubt be a welcome push to garnering further development in the area, which to date has been slower than anticipated.
