Though still undergoing a few finishing touches, the new Edmonton Public Library Capilano Branch is officially open to the public today. Located on 67 Street just south of 101 Avenue, the angular lines of the building are hard to miss. Designed by Group2 and Patkau Architects, the building provides a sharp but complimentary contrast against the Fulton Ravine directly behind it.
Inside, the wood slats that make up the vaulted ceiling bring a feeling of warmth over the entire space.
This feeling of warmth extends to the large glass windows facing the snowy ravine, where tables and chairs are located for reading or working alongside a stunning view of the outdoors.
The new branch offers a larger children's area, and is the second branch to offer a "Makerspace" that includes a 3D printer available to the public, among other multimedia equipment.
A large community program room is available to be booked for events, while a quiet, separate study area is available for public use.
Viewed above and below, the common spaces have been designed with natural light and materials very much in mind.
A grand opening celebration is set to take place on Friday, November 23, at 10:30 am. The new Capilano branch is expected to serve up to 198,000 visitors annually from Edmonton's Southeast communities and beyond.
