While it has only been a few weeks since our last update, a new crop of photos on our Forum highlight the latest developments from the site of Edgar Developments' The MacLaren, currently on the rise in Oliver. The podium level now structurally complete, the tower portion appears to be beginning its ascent, the 27-storey, 240-unit apartment block soon to be a dominant fixture upon the local skyline.

Featuring a sizeable setback, the residential portion of the DIALOG-designed The MacLaren will rise above a multi-storey mixed-use podium, which will front onto 124 St NW and 102 Ave NW at the southern tip of the bustling Westmount commercial strip.

The podium will also be joined by the facsimile of a demolished heritage facade, once known as the Buena Vista Apartments, and most recently as the Glenora Bed & Breakfast Inn, which will be incorporated into the base of the structure.

While the nod to heritage is welcome, there will remain those who believe more could have been done to retain the original facade, facsimiles never quite capturing the essence of historic materials and craftsmanship.

Nevertheless, local residents will more than likely be pleased to note that the footprint of The MacLaren will restore a significant amount of the former urban vibrancy that the corner once held owing to the placement of ground-floor retail in addition to the aforementioned facsimile.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
