After more than a year of renovations, the former The Artworks store once adjacent to the TD Insurance branch at the northeast corner of 101 St NW and 103 Ave NW, has been completely redone, opening last month as a bright and airy Shoppers Drug Mart. A marked improvement over its subterranean predecessor, the new Shoppers location brings a significant amount of street presence to the immediate area.
Part of an ongoing, multi-million dollar facelift for the City Centre Mall, which originally opened in 1974, the latest redevelopment, affecting just a small portion of the sprawling downtown complex, has brought a splash of corporate post-modernism to the site.
Outfitted with a mixture of clear and slightly aqua-marine tinted glass, in keeping with the brand's current look, the new Shoppers location, despite what critics might point to as yet another example of a chain retail outlet popping up in the downtown core, fits in well with its immediate surroundings.
In fact, one need only consider the new facelift from another vantage point to be reminded of the efficacy of a little steel and glass within a corner of downtown Edmonton that has long been overdue for a refresh. For while there is still more to go, this latest update appears to be a step in the right direction.
