Busy during his recent trip to Alberta, PM Trudeau made a stop in Edmonton to announce the Federal Government's plans to fund the $40 million overhaul and grade separation of the 50 Street Rail Crossing. A long-time item on the City's wish-list (prompting Mayor Iveson to post a celebratory video on twitter), the future grade separation of the traffic-snarling, level crossing southeast of downtown, will finally bring some relief to area residents and commuters. With work set to begin in the immediate vicinity of the crossing at 50th St NW and 82 Ave NW, the grade separation project will be augmented by a host of related improvements to the local street grid, with an aim towards getting traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

Beyond the planned grade separation, 50th Street will be widened from four lanes to six, while the intersection of 50 St and 82 Ave will be realigned to ensure direct connections to local businesses and neighbourhoods. For pedestrians and cyclists, long forgotten along this highly industrialized stretch, the addition of curbs, sidewalks, and multi-use paths will also be part of the overhaul.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this recent development in the comments section below.
