The redevelopment of Bonnie Doon Mall into a major new Transit-Oriented Development hub took another step forward on Wednesday, with a public open house held at La Cité francophone that showed area residents the latest conceptual vision for the site by Morguard and B&A Planning Group.

Accompanying the images released earlier this month, the display boards at the Connect Bonnie Doon open house showed the site, which is bounded by 82nd and 90th Avenues to the south and north and by 83rd and 85th Streets east and west, divided into five districts. Those include a retail & entertainment district, a commercial main street, a health & wellness district, a central park with boutique retail, and a garden district.

Plans also show a new internal roadway system with narrow, shared-use streets, and a transit plaza connecting the Bonnie Doon Valley Line LRT stop to the interior of the site, as well as a belt of greenspace that cuts through the centre of site east-to-west.

Firm details about height, density, and building massing are not yet available, as the redevelopment plans are still in progress, though the boards and representative for Morguard discussed having buildings of a variety of sizes and styles and potentially having towers between eight to forty stories on parts of the site, and between 3,000 and 6,000 residential units.

The proponents are still integrating feedback from the community at each open house, at the "Inspiration Centre" in the mall itself, and through online surveys. One more open house is expected in the late summer, before finalizing the rezoning plan to be brought to City Council.
