The multi-building Southpark on Whyte development is a step closer to construction after a permit was filed with the City to excavate the site "for purpose of remediation." Developed by ONE Properties, the project sprawls across four lots on 106 Street NW between Whyte Avenue and 81 Avenue NW, replacing the former Southpark Motors that vacated the premises in 2009.
City council gave their approval to the project last March despite unfinished work on planWhyte, a framework meant to guide the future development of the neighbourhood. The mixed-use project puts residences above ground-floor commercial spaces on Whyte Avenue, with townhomes negotiating the rear of the property.
The iconic Southpark on Whyte sign that called the attention of passersby, and from which the development takes its name, is being preserved under an agreement between ONE Properties and Wheaton Properties. Now a municipal historic resource, the sign's colour and form will be restored, though the neon tubes will be swapped for LED ones.
