Edmontonians are being invited by the City to provide input on the preferred route and stop locations of the proposed Centre LRT, which aims to mend the missing east/west link in the LRT network plan. A study for the Centre LRT began in June 2017 and staff are now preparing to present the preferred route to council in the coming weeks.

The project, currently with no funding or timeline for completion, envisions tracks through downtown, the University of Alberta, Strathcona, Bonnie Doon and neighbourhoods further east, with connections to existing bus services and the under-construction Valley Line LRT

The new central LRT route would connect with the Valley Line West LRT at 102 Avenue and 107 Street, then head south before turning west on 99 Avenue. It would course south again just west of 109 Street to a new river crossing, where it would travel along 110 Street and turn west onto 89 Avenue. The preferred route turns south on 112 Street and then heads east onto Whyte Avenue.

The High Level Bridge was originally intended to host the new line, though further study determined the bridge would not be able to support the additional load. Similarly, the adjacent Dudley B. Menzies Bridge already accommodates the Capital and Metro high-floor LRT routes, and is presently unable to accommodate the low-floor system envisioned here.
