After sprucing up a relatively short stretch of 105 Avenue NW from 119 to 116 Street in 2016, the City is on the cusp of extending their revitalization efforts eastward through to 97 Street. The purpose of the streetscape makeover lies in making the 2.6-kilometre corridor more accessible and pedestrian-friendly, especially as it moves through commercial and light industrial areas.
The work conducted in 2016 was informed by a 2013 preliminary design that focused on 105 Avenue between 109 Street and 119 Street. The second phase of the project will bring the remaining stretch of the roadway largely in line with the new configuration completed between 119 and 116 Street.
The design 'refresh' also makes accommodations for protected bicycle lanes along 105 Avenue. As part of the first phase, an eastbound bike lane was installed on the south side of 105 Avenue across the subject site. The 2013 plan also envisioned a westbound bike lane from 117 Street to 109 Street. The one-block portion between 117 and 116 Street — the section included in the first phase study area — was completed.
The preliminary design options for the remaining part of 105 Avenue will be revealed at a drop-in public meeting on February 13 from 4 to 8 PM at the Iconoclast Coffee Shop (11807 105 Avenue).
