The southwest Edmonton neighbourhood of Windermere will be the location of a new three-storey retirement residence that broke ground on Thursday. Before marking the start of construction, Chartwell Retirement Residences unveiled plans for the Ambleside development, which will feature 137 suites off Allan Drive.

The $48 million Chartwell Wescott project employs a prairie-style design that boasts earthy colour palettes, stained wood finishes, art glass windows, and horizontal lines reflective of the wide-open local geography.

Chartwell Wescott will help meet an acute demand for seniors accommodations. According to the City's Age Friendly Edmonton report, "there isn't enough room in seniors accommodations for today's Edmontonians over 65, let alone tomorrow's. And fewer seniors than ever want to be in traditional lodging." The 2016 census recorded over 162,000 seniors in the city.
