The Edmonton Arts Council and the City of Edmonton announced yesterday the winning artists and their works which will adorn the Valley Line LRT stations and supporting infrastructure.
Fourteen public artworks were commissioned by the city from a range of Canadian artists, including four Edmonton locals. Two pieces are commissioned by Indigenous artists, and one by an international artist.
Attendees of the announcement saw draft images of each proposed piece including medium and location, and profiles of the artists behind them. Five of the artists in attendance shared their stories and vision with the audience.
The pieces were selected from 260 proposals by community, artist, city and LRT project committees, and are funded through the city's Percent for Art policy, in which one percent of a project's budget must be allocated to public art.
Details of each piece will continue to evolve through consultation with the communities in which they will reside. More information on each can be found in a PDF here.
