Residents hoping to learn more about ProCura's evolving rezoning proposal for the Century Park site will have the opportunity to see the latest plans at two drop-in sessions this week. To be held from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday May 24 and Thursday May 25 at the William Lutsky Family YMCA (1975 - 111 Street NW), the public engagement will offer attendees an overview of the proposal that is heading to City Council at the June 12 public hearing.
Located east of the Century Park LRT station on the site of the old Heritage Mall, the site has given way to partial residential development, but the economic slump of 2008 put the brakes on further construction. In response to the post-recession housing market, ProCura is developing a new master plan that envisions a denser assemblage of buildings with smaller floor plans.
The original and approved Kaskitayo Outline Plan painted a picture of 2,850 luxury condominiums situated around a manmade lake. The revised scheme would swap out the lake for a main street, with additional road and pedestrian connections crossing the property. The new vision would include some 4,500 luxury rental units spread across a number of buildings ranging in height from four to 22 storeys. An above-grade parkade, built and operated by the developer, could replace the existing park-and-ride facilities on the surface lot.
Both drop-in sessions — which will present the same information — will also show how feedback collected from the public has impacted the proposal. A previous open house on November 30 at the Rideau Park School gymnasium elicited multiple comments about the traffic, parking, density, and height of the proposal, with many of those conversations expected to continue this week.
