Late March applications filed with the City to commence partial shoring and construct hoarding, since accompanied by photos of an on-site shoring rig, are proof positive that Westrich Pacific Corp. is starting construction on their 43-storey Encore Tower. The developer just finished work on the sold-out Ultima project and has now shifted their attention to the former surface parking lot at the corner of 103 Street and 102 Avenue.
The Dub Architects-designed building will become Edmonton's tallest condominium-only tower. Like other recent additions to the skyline, Encore will be outfitted with floor-to-ceiling glass and ground itself to the streetscape with a brick podium in deference to the Warehouse District's pre-war vernacular.
Its 179 units — prices start at about $350,000 — will boast three-metre-high ceilings and kitchens replete with stainless steel appliances, flat-panel drawers and cabinets, and quartz countertops. The penthouses range in size from 120 to 260 square metres and come with private outdoor terraces; potential buyers scouting out these bespoke penthouses will have to shell out up to $1.5 million for the privilege of living here. According to co-chief executive at Westrich Pacific David Sanche, approximately 70 percent of the units have sold.
If the waterfall in the lobby wasn't indication enough of the building's unique features, a number of interior amenities aim to do the job. Atop the podium on the fifth floor, a wading pool and lounge with an indoor-outdoor fireplace, fitness centre, and bar awaits the building's occupants.
The project is expected to be delivered in 2019, when most of the nearby ICE District will be built out. The new downtown neighbourhood is acting as a magnet for young professionals looking to settle in the core and capitalize on the resurgence of urbanity in Edmonton.
