Family-owned Bateman Properties has filed an application along with ONE Properties to redevelop a storefront that grocer Tubby Bateman once owned. The Old Strathcona site in question is the Wild Earth Bakery and Cafe, plus Wild Earth Foods next door, located at the corner of 99 Street NW and 89 Avenue NW. They are proposing to rezone the lands from a Neighbourhood Convenience Commercial Zone and Low Rise Apartment Zone designation to a Site Specific Development Control Provision, which would pave the way for a 31-storey tower 95 metres in height.

The proposal would contain approximately 240 residential units with commercial uses at grade, townhouse-style dwellings facing 89 Avenue NW and underground parking. In an interview with the Edmonton Journal late last year, ONE Properties' vice-president of multi-family development Tom Burr said "the intention is to bring back the cafe and grocery," ensuring the long-standing establishment continues to thrive in the neighbourhood.

An application has also been submitted to close a portion of the lane west of 99 Street NW to accommodate the development, and another application has been made to amend the Strathcona Area Redevelopment Plan to support the requested height. The City of Edmonton is looking for input on the proposed rezoning at an open house to be held on Wednesday, March 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at King Edward School, 8530 - 101 Street NW.
