Alberta Construction Magazine has announced the winners of this year's Top Projects Awards — an annual province-wide contest that recognizes the best in construction and urban development. Whittled down from 26 projects, the 11 finalists were judged on their design, sustainability, adherence to budget and scheduling, the use of innovative construction techniques, and the overall impact on the community. To no surprise, Edmonton scored big across a number of categories.

The striking stainless steel-clad HOK-designed Rogers Place has attracted considerable attention from the media, Edmontonians, and hockey fans. Now adding to the praise, the judges bestowed upon the building the top 'Project of the Year' prize as well as a win in the 'Commercial Design' category. The $1.8 billion northeast leg of Anthony Henday Drive snagged the Civil (over $50 million) award. The 27-kilometre stretch, which was executed on time and on budget, completes the ring road around Edmonton.

Another two Edmonton projects — the Stantec-designed Terwillegar Park Footbridge and the Royal Alberta Museum — received a pair of awards. The stressed ribbon bridge won awards in the Civil (under $50 million) and Civil Design categories. DIALOG's Royal Alberta Museum shared their win with Calgary's Studio Bell in the Institutional (over $50 million) and Institutional Design categories.
