West Edmonton Mall transit centre construction begins Monday
The West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre will have a larger heated waiting area next winter.

Jennifer Laraway, a spokesperson for Edmonton Transit, said the upgrades are badly needed given the current age of the building and the number of people who use the station.

"It'll just be a much more inviting and secure space for the passengers," Laraway said.

The upgrades include a new shelter with more seating, added security cameras, outdoor lighting, redesigned sidewalks and a new public art installation.

Nearly 20,000 daily riders can now enjoy a completely renovated transit centre. The 34-year-old West Edmonton Mall site closed in May 2016 to undergo a massive transformation that includes:
  • A larger heated waiting area with 80 per cent more seating space
  • Improved platforms and sidewalks
  • Upgraded lighting
  • New public art
  • Improved safety and security meeting the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design standards, including additional and upgraded security cameras
Although the transit centre is now open, bus service will remain along 87 avenue between 172 - 175 street westbound until later this year. The City received federal-provincial funding through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), which allows for additional sidewalk and busway work to proceed this summer.

The West Edmonton Mall transit centre project totalled nearly $3 million, including design and construction. The project finished on-time and on budget.
