As the city looks to transit to curb its car-dependent growth, Edmonton Transit boss Eddie Robar says improvements both big and small are required to get more people riding.

And a new report from Edmonton's Transit System Advisory Board agrees.

The report calls for improvements like partnering with sports agencies to encourage ridership on game nights, creating mobile payment systems and developing a reporting tool that tracks performance.

Robar says it's all about customer service.

"We can’t have a million different cars driving around the roads every single day,” he said in an interview. “When we look at the changes in the future, it’s really designing a system people want.”

Board wants to make Edmonton transit accountable to bus riders
Should I take transit? More than half of the people taking the bus or LRT today would say no, according to a new report released by the city Thursday.

According to surveys conducted quarterly at transit centres, only 44 per cent of respondents would recommend transit to a friend. Half of the 20,500 complaints received in 2015 were about the drivers either not picking up people who are waiting at a bus stop or not driving safely.

Edmonton’s transit advisory board released a detailed set of recommendations aimed at transforming that customer experience Thursday, including best practices from other North American cities.

They’re pushing Edmonton to make specific managers publicly responsible for the safety and cleanliness of transit centres; publicly post the on-time records for buses each day, month and quarter; and make a better system to upgrade training for any bus driver who receives customer complaints.

Edmonton Transit open to partnering with Oilers on bus fare
With downtown parking an ongoing battle on game nights, Edmonton Transit boss Eddie Robar says the solution may lie in using Oilers game tickets as transit fare.

Though the idea is preliminary, Edmonton Transit boss Eddie Robar told Metro he’s open to partnering with Oilers Entertainment Group so that hockey fans could use their hockey tickets to board the bus or LRT.

“There would be a lot more players involved in those conversations than just the city itself,” he said in an interview Thursday. “The Oilers Entertainment Group would have to come on board.”

A report released last week with suggestions for improving the experience of people who take transit also recommended that ETS expand the inclusion of fare with tickets to major sporting events.

Edmonton Transit report recommends improvements including new reporting system
A report headed to committee is outlining various ways the city can improve its public transit system.

The report, called Edmonton Transit User Experience, will go to Community and Public Services Committee on Monday and a recommendation will be made to council.

There is a recommendation to create a code of conduct for riders and transit operators. The current code of conduct for passengers was last amended in 2011 and according to the new report, “is virtually unknown to transit users.” It makes no mention of accessibility, ramps or priority seating. There is no code of conduct for operators.
