Arc Smart Fare System

I like it a lot, do we know if they are going to add fare gates at all or will it just be an honor system with readers?

One thoughtful feature Portlands card has is a built-in hole for a lanyard:

Pshaw! @Daveography "not a designer"? Well, if so, you have struck Gold! That is a beautiful card!!! You should submit it to the City along with the anagram explanation. I am serious -- this is really good! "Something Edmonton" A bird in flight has connotations of "speed" and "elegance". Also, I noticed that you picked up on my lower case "i" -- should be worth 1% or 2% credit, yes?

It would be awfully expensive to add fare gates to solve a problem that doesn't exist, especially when you are building a boat load of walk up LRT stops without any provisions for them (the legacy LRT system used to have fare gates so can presumably have them added without the ruinous expense of running electricity and accounting for the space they take up).

If the two systems are treated separately (as they should in my mind given the different ROW etc) you could probably justify gates for the high floor system and readers for the lowfloor
But why? What problem are you trying to solve?

Fare evasion is usually lower with gates.
You have a lot to unlearn that is accepted wisdom from elsewhere. :)

Edmonton "According to the city’s numbers, ETS had a fare evasion rate of just under two per cent in 2015, down from just under three per cent in 2012.":
https://globalnews.ca/news/3247159/...edmontonians-pay-tansit-fares-city-committee/

This is down from 6% on LRT in 2002. https://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/documents/PDF/05148_Fare_Evasion_Final_Report.pdf

As for Calgary "98.3% of passengers purchased tickets during 2-week study period":
https://newsroom.calgary.ca/fare-compliance-on-calgary-transit-hits-all-time-high/

And older data: page 84 of here: http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/circulars/ec177.pdf

This is because there is good enforcement, Edmonton improved it in the late 2000s, Calgary in the early 90s, driving down evasion from 7.4% in 1993. https://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/documents/PDF/05148_Fare_Evasion_Final_Report.pdf

These numbers are either in line with or lower than the TTC. https://www.blogto.com/city/2017/12/ttc-50-million-fare-evasion/

This how I always understood it as well: the cost of installing and maintaining gates - plus the staffing requirements at each station to assist passengers - far outweigh losses to fare evasion, which are also recouped by mobile enforcement.
