Citizens invited to Pop-Up Museum in West Rossdale
July 21, 2016

The City of Edmonton and Edmonton City as Museum Project are hosting a Pop-Up Museum in West Rossdale. Citizens are invited to learn more about one of our city’s most historically significant areas and to share stories about their connection to this meaningful place.

Date: Sunday, July 24, 2016
Time: Noon - 4 p.m.
Location: Rossdale Community Hall (10135 96 Ave, Edmonton)
Free BBQ provided by Fat Franks

“River Crossing, also known as West Rossdale, is at the heart of our city. It is a place that is historically and culturally significant for many people, and where the history is long, layered, and deep,” said Lisa Larson, Senior Planner, City of Edmonton. “It is a site that has been at the heart of trade, travel, kinship, spirituality, community, and culture for thousands of years.”

The Pop-Up Museum will be an interactive opportunity to not only learn more about this past, but for attendees to also share their connection to the West Rossdale area. Attendees who have a photo or item related to the area are encouraged to bring the items to be shared and displayed at the event.

Citizens invited to provide input into Heritage Interpretive Plan
August 12, 2016

Citizens are invited to provide input to help create the Heritage Interpretive Plan for the River Crossing (West Rossdale) area.

The Heritage Interpretive Plan will guide how heritage and culture are reflected and communicated throughout the area as it evolves over time. It will honour our collective history, respect Indigenous heritage and culture, and will contribute to the future identity of this special place within Edmonton’s river valley.

Input can be provided:
  • Through an online survey available at Edmonton.ca/HeritageInterpretivePlan from August 12 to October 15, 2016
  • At a public visioning workshop. September 7, 2016, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Stanley A. Milner Library (7 Sir Winston Churchill Square). Individuals who would like to attend the workshop are asked to email their interest to rivercrossing@edmonton.ca.
The Heritage Interpretive Plan is expected to be complete in early 2017 and will serve as one of several cornerstones for the development of a Business Plan for the West Rossdale area.

Citizens invited to review Heritage Interpretive Plan for West Rossdale

March 21, 2017

Citizens are invited to learn about and provide feedback on the draft Heritage Interpretive Plan for the River Crossing (West Rossdale) area at a drop-in open house.

Date: Monday, April 3, 2017
Time: 5 -7 p.m.
Location: Edmonton Tower (3rd floor - Room 380, 10111 104 Avenue)

Input on the draft plan can also be provided through an online form available at Edmonton.ca/HeritageInterpretivePlan from March 21 to April 5, 2017. This will be the last opportunity to provide feedback on this document before it goes to City Council this summer.

The Heritage Interpretive Plan will guide how heritage and culture are reflected and communicated throughout the area as it evolves over time. It will honour our collective heritage, including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage and culture, and will contribute to the future identity of this special place within Edmonton and the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

The draft plan was created by building off of previous research, work and discussions around heritage in the River Crossing area as well as through input collected through various public engagement opportunities that occurred in 2016.

Get involved: West Rossdale Redevelopment Drop-in Workshop
November 27, 2017

The River Crossing area in West Rossdale is an important place in our city, with a historically significant past. Members of the public are invited to join City staff at a drop-in workshop about the area’s business plan, which is the next key step toward transforming West Rossdale into a vibrant community and special place for all Edmontonians.

Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2017
Time: 5 p.m - 8 p.m. (presentations at 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15)
Location: Old Timers Cabin, 9430 Scona Road NW

The River Crossing Business Plan involves preparing an updated redevelopment concept for West Rossdale that considers future land uses in the area, including a repurposed Rossdale power plant, as well as infrastructure requirements.

This event will be an opportunity for members of the public to provide early input to help guide design options. Staff will use feedback from this meeting to inform further work on redevelopment plans. Further public engagement is planned for 2018.

Larger than life animals light up Rossdale area
October 5, 2018

Edmonton artists Betty Hushlak and Tim Folkman celebrate the hundreds of species of mammals and birds that reside in the river valley area by projecting images of wildlife on the west wall of the old Rossdale Power Plant. The exhibition, Wildlife, is part of the Tracing Connections in River Crossing grant program sponsored by the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Heritage Council and the Edmonton Arts Council.

Date: October 12 and 13
Time: 8 - 11 p.m.
Location: Viewpoints from High Level Bridge or south river bank near Walterdale Bridge

Images of animals will be brought to life on the side of the Rossdale Power Plant in a visually spectacular display of light and scale. The projections are on a 10 - 15 minute loop and run for three hours each night. The exhibit celebrates the rich ecosystem of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The projections can best be seen from the east shared use path of the Walterdale Bridge.

The Tracing Connections in River Crossing grant program is a pilot program which encouraged artists to share their interpretations of the rich and layered history of the Rossdale area. Funds were also provided for walking tours of the neighbourhood and for a musical performance happening November 30 and December 1.

Any word on what this is for exactly? It'd be nice to be having breakfast there in a few years. One can dream.

Too bad. I would love to hit a farmers market or have brunch there. Haha.

Not sure if this is the best place for this post, but here are some shots of the Pratt Street Power plant redevelopment in Baltimore. Similar to our Rossdale Power Plant. Coal fired power plant build in the early 1900s, located just off the harbour in downtown Baltimore, decommissioned in the early 1970s, redeveloped in the mid 1980s. Has housed various commercial entities/uses but is now home to a seafood restaurant, a Barnes and Noble bookstore and a Hard Rock Cafe. There is some office space in the upper floors and looks to be some residential in a newer attached building. Would love to see our old Rossdale redeveloped into something like this.

EPCOR is willing to hand the Rossdale Generating Station over to the city for $1.00; the report goes to Executive Committee on October 1:
  • Administration and EPCOR have been negotiating the transfer of the Rossdale Power Plant since it was decommissioned in 2012. The agreement is now ready for Council's approval.
  • The City of Edmonton will acquire the land and all buildings for $1.00 and will take responsibility for all ongoing servicing, operations, and maintenance costs, estimated at $300,000 per year or more.
  • Administration says the return of the land is "essential for numerous City projects currently underway, including River Crossing." The biggest risk is with site contamination, with full remediation estimated "in the tens of millions of dollars."
  • "The land transfer would also accommodate ongoing conversations regarding the proposed gondola project."
