Pope Francis visit to Western Canada - July 24-27

"Cost of the upgrade has been pegged at $441,000, which will be covered from existing budgets unrelated to the Pope’s visit."???

so, does this mean there is $441,000 of work that was otherwise planned that will not get done?

or does it mean that there was $441,000 in the existing budget that wasn't actually allocated for anything?

and how many "other" $441,000 chunks are potentially hidden away but easily accessible when someone really wants/needs it?

and who exactly is that "someone" because i don't recall this being a debated agenda item for council?

All great questions that council should be asking administration. We have people rolling over dead on our streets due to addictions (and some of those are victims of residential school tragedy), street lights and bridges (as you mentioned) covered in rust. There are certainly more pressing needs that $441k can help with. As @EdmTrekker said, why can't Catholics pay for this? Certainly they got the means to do so.

I've emailed my councillor asking for clarification on how we were able to come up with these funds. Stay tuned

that wasn’t the question.

the question was how many of those potentially thousands of people would not come to edmonton to see him if we didn’t spend $441,000 repainting the dove?

my guess is none.

which means the economic gain in reallocating that $441,000 for the repainting is also none.

if anything, assuming those funds were reallocated from areas previously deemed a better use for them (otherwise the repainting would have already been in the budget), it is probably easier to make a case that the economic benefit you’re implying here is in fact negative.

Tickets for the mass at Commonwealth Stadium were available as of this morning.

I received a response back from Councillor Paquette's office (I live in his ward now) in regards to my questions and concerns about the restoration. I asked for more details on how this funding was contrived, if it was unallocated funds being used, and if not, are other priorities being delayed because of this. I questioned the total cost of the restoration, while acknowledging that lead paint removal had to be done in a environmentally sensitive manner. I asked if a full restoration was the only option as well, and suggested that the GoA and catholic church should be covering part or all of the costs.

I was advised that this decision wasn't made by city council, and that it was made by the city manager's office. They also advised they share "similar thoughts about my questions" and have asked the office of the city manager for more information, of which they will share with me once it's available.

it would seem that the $1 million in that article is direct costs and in-kind services (police, commonwealth stadium). putting aside why the catholic church - one of the wealthiest organizations on the planet - is extracting that from an effectively bankrupt entity comprised of many of the people the pope is coming here to apologize to for its past behaviour, this $1 million doesn’t seem to include the $441,000 on paint and restoration of the dove. I wonder what else doesn’t it include?

Many of the people he's coming to apologize to, many of the people he SHOULD apologize to, and a lot of people who couldn't care less for the Catholic Church (or any religious institution, for that matter).
I feel like this $1M would be put to MUCH better use and that the church should be paying for this AND damages (but then I think we'd bankrupt them... not a bad idea actually)

"Good afternoon, Edmonton!

Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20, and continuing through Saturday July 23, the EPS and its partners with the Alberta RCMP and the Calgary Police Service will be conducting training in Edmonton and parts of rural Alberta. This training will involve police vehicles and motorcycles driving in formation and simulating the escort of a motorcade. Minor traffic delays are expected.

Drivers are reminded that activated emergency vehicles have the right of way over all other vehicles, so please safely signal and move to the right to make room for the emergency vehicles to pass. Stop and make sure all emergency vehicles have passed before you signal and merge back into traffic when it is safe to do so.
Your patience is appreciated while we complete this important training."
